The Little Horn

Lyn Mize

Before reading this article, the reader should read Four Beasts Out of The Sea to understand the three beasts—the Lion, the Leopard, and the Bear—and how they relate to the Ten-Horned Beast, which is the fourth beast out of the sea. It is true that the term “beast” is used in reference to the leader of the Ten-Horned Beast, and to the Ten-Horned Beast in particular. In the following discussion of the little horn, it is in reference to the Antichrist himself, who is depicted as a beast also. This is common throughout Scripture to alternate the word beast between the leader and the empire itself. This is done because of the inseparable ties between the king and the kingdom. The kingdom is not a kingdom without the king, and the king is not a king without the kingdom.

The Little Horn in the following Scriptures is the Antichrist. This should be obvious because of the description in verse 7 of the horn having eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things. Verse 11 reiterates the great words that the horn spoke. Please note in verse 8 that he is described as a little horn, but in verse 11, the descriptive adjective “little” has been dropped. Since horn means strength, his little strength quickly changes into a horn that is stronger than his peers, as he quickly plucks up three of the previous horns by the roots. This means that he usurps their power and authority. When Antichrist first comes out and reveals himself, he will have very little power and strength, but this strength quickly snowballs because of his previous fame as leader of the most powerful nation on earth. He does not stay a little horn for long after his revelation. The world will be astonished that he is still alive after all of these years, and he will be catapulted into power.

(Dan 7:8 KJV)  I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

(Dan 7:11 KJV)  I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.

It is well known by Bible scholars that the little horn in these two verses of Scripture is the Antichrist who will head up the Ten-Horned Beast. According to Keil and Delitzsch, “The eye and the mouth suggest a human being as being represented by the horn. Eyes and the seeing with eyes are the symbols of insight, circumspection, prudence. The king will thus excel the others in point of wisdom and circumspection. But why the eyes of a man? Certainly this is not merely to indicate to the reader that the horn signified a man. This is already distinctly enough shown by the fact that eyes, a mouth, and speech were attributed to it. The eyes of a man were not attributed to it in opposition to a beast, but in opposition to a higher celestial being, for whom the ruler denoted by the horn might be mistaken on account of the terribleness of his rule and government.”

The higher celestial being mentioned by Keil and Delitzsch is in reference to Satan. Antichrist is not Satan, but he will be indwelled by Satan for the last half of the tribulation period. Antichrist will receive his power and authority from Satan, but he will be a mere man. This is the meaning of 666, since 666 is “the number of man”. Man was created on the sixth day of the week, so his number is 666, a triune being of spirit, soul, and body.

In the middle of the tribulation period when Antichrist is indwelled by Satan, he will enter the temple in Jerusalem and proclaim to be god, but he will still be mere man—even though indwelled and empowered by Satan. As 666, he falls one short of the divinely perfect number 777. Antichrist is mere man—666—while Jesus Christ is fully God—777.

The idea that the name of Antichrist must add up to 666 is the product of man’s imagination, and has no Biblical basis.  The Scriptures for 666 in both the KJV and the NIV are as follows:

(Rev 13:16 KJV)  And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

(Rev 13:17 KJV)  And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

(Rev 13:18 KJV)  Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Please note that the mark is the "name" of the beast or the "number of his name". The name symbolizes a person's authority or character. For example, when the Scriptures tell us to pray in the name of Jesus, it means that we are to pray in his power and his authority. Ending our prayers "In Jesus Name" is not praying in the power and authority of Jesus Christ. We pray in the Name of Jesus when we crucify the old flesh nature and allow His Character and His Authority to be manifested in our lives.

The name of Antichrist is the same. The mark of Antichrist is the symbol of his power and authority. The mark is the universal bar code, which is not a number but a series of marks or etchings. However, these etchings can be computed or counted as numbers. The scanners read these etchings and print out a number. Therefore, the mark is a number, and it is the symbol of his power and authority. Every bar code has three etchings that can be read by the naked eye as 666. However, the computer scanner reads these etchings as delimiters for reading the data.

Consequently, every bar code mark contains three sixes, and these three sixes symbolize the power and authority of Antichrist. To grasp this in a simple straightforward manner, simply insert the word "authority" in the place of name in the above Scriptures, and you have the meaning of the verse:

(Rev 13:16 NIV)  He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,

(Rev 13:17 NIV)  so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the AUTHORITY of the beast or the number of his AUTHORITY.

(Rev 13:18 NIV)  This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

The number 666 is man's number and it represents the power and authority of Antichrist. It is this mark with the number 666 in it that allows Antichrist to have authority over the masses. It will be used to coerce people into worshipping him. Without it he would not be able to force so many people to worship him.

There is nothing in this passage that states that the letters of his name must somehow add up to equal 666. Do we use Greek letters, English letters or Gaelic letters? What base do we use? Do we include first, middle and last names; first, middle initial, and last; first and last; first; or just the last. I have seen literally hundreds of methods used by researchers trying to get certain leaders names to add up to 666. Someone even said that Ronald Wilson Reagan was Antichrist because his name added up to 666 (i.e., it had six letters in each of his names). It is chasing the wind to attempt to identify Antichrist in such manner. God provided a detailed biography of Antichrist that makes his identity unmistakeable.

(Dan 7:11 KJV)  I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.

The voice of the Antichrist will continue to speak great words until he is slain by Jesus Christ and his body destroyed and given to the burning flame. The statement that the beast is slain and his body destroyed by being cast into the Lake of Fire is confirmed in the following Scripture:

(Rev 19:20 KJV)  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Daniel also states in this verse that he continued to contemplate the vision of the four beasts until the beast was slain. The use of the term beast here is in reference to the man who is slain. It is most interesting that the word for beast in verse 11 above comes from the following root word:

2421. chayah, khaw-yaw'; a prim. root [comp. H2331, H2424]; to live whether lit. or fig.; causat, to revive:--keep (leave, make) alive, X certainly, give (promise) life, (let, suffer to) live, nourish up, preserve (alive), quicken, recover, repair, restore (to life), revive, (X God) save (alive, life, lives), X surely, be whole.

Please note in particular the emboldened words above. This is exactly what happened to Antichrist. He appeared to suffer a mortal head wound, but he was revived, quickened, preserved alive, saved alive, or restored to life, to the astonishment of the people when he is revealed. The secret has been kept for over 40 years and is now about to be revealed to the world in accordance with the following Scripture:

(Rev 13:3 KJV) And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

Antichrist first takes over the kingdom that he once reigned over, but he quickly merges it with the kingdom that is described as the Ten-Horned Beast. This is a unifying of America and the European Union under the leadership of Antichrist. It will be a most powerful union with power and influence over the world. As described in The Four Beasts Out of the Sea, the Ten-Horned Beast will trample down both the Leopard (i.e., Egypt) and the Bear (i.e., Russia) during the first half of the tribulation period. The trampling down of Egypt is described in my article: The Burden of Egypt. The trampling down of Russia is described in Ezekiel 38 and 39. There are numerous books on the destruction of the Bear by God, who will utilize the Ten-Horned Beast to do His bidding.

The Little Horn of Daniel 8

The Little Horn of Daniel 8 does not literally refer to the Antichrist, but it literally describes the desecration of the Temple by Antiochus Epiphanes. Antiochus' desecration of the temple was to last 2,300 evenings and mornings before its cleansing (8:14). Some have thought this as 2300 days, but it is preferable to interpret this as 2300 evening and morning sacrifices, which would be 1150 days. It was the sacrifices that were interrupted when Antiochus offered a sow on the alter on December 16, 167 B.C. Judas Maccabeus restored the temple and refurbished it in late 164 and on into 163 B.C. when all the Jewish sacrifices were fully restored and religious independence gained for Judah. If the 2300 evenings and mornings referred to 2300 days, then the time period would have lasted from Antiochus’ incursion into Jerusalem in 170 B.C. until the restoration of the temple in late 164 B.C. by Judas Maccabeus. The 1150 days is most likely the correct interpretation.

Even though the Little Horn of Daniel 8 literally refers to Antiochus Epiphanes, he definitely typifies the coming of Antichrist to desecrate the temple in the near future. The Little Horn of Daniel 8 has already been literally fulfilled in Antiochus, but there is yet a prophetic fulfillment in the individual called Antichrist.

Antiochus teaches us that (1) Antichrist will achieve great power by subduing others (v. 24). (2) He will rise to power by promising false security to the world and Israel (v. 25). (3) He will be very intelligent and persuasive (v. 23). (4) He will be controlled or empowered by another (i.e., Satan) (v. 24). (5) He will subjugate Israel as its adversary and authority (vv. 24-25). (6) He will oppose the Prince of Princes, or the Lord Jesus Christ (v. 25).(7) His rule will be terminated by supernatural divine judgment (v. 25).

Consequently, we see that Antiochus Epiphanes was the literal fulfillment of the Little Horn of Daniel 8, but Antichrist is the type of the Little Horn in Daniel 8.

Antichrist will achieve great power by taking over the helm of New Babylon (i.e., the USA) by casting away our Constitution and national sovereignty. He will then link the new dictatorial government of America with the European Union (i.e., the Ten-Horn Beast). There are currently 27 members of the European Union (EU), but there are only 13 members of the group called Schengen. This group utilizes the Euro as currency and the members of these 13 countries are not required to show a passport when traveling from one country to another. Schengen may very well be the group of the European Union that will be reduced to 10 in the turmoil that brings about the reappearance and rise of Antichrist to power. Antichrist is the 11th horn that comes up among the other horns of the EU. He will subdue three of the horns by taking away their power and authority. The empire of Antichrist will consist of ten nations of the European Union and the United States. It is the union of America and the EU that will be so powerful that no country in the world will be able to fight against it for a period of time. Even Russia will be conquered militarily with the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38 and 39. Then at the end of the seven year tribulation period, China and the kings from the East will come against Antichrist and totally destroy America or Babylon the Great, as this destruction has been ordained by God.

Antichrist is the beast in the following verse:

Rev 17:11 (KJV) And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

This is perhaps the most revealing verse for identifying the Antichrist. This verse tells us that Antichrist will be the leader of the eighth world power, the revived Roman Empire. The ten toes of iron and clay mentioned in Daniel 2:42-43 represent the empire of Antichrist. This means that he will be the leader of the Ten-Horned Beast, which will almost certainly arise from the European Union. This is also the Ten-Horned Beast mentioned in Revelation 13:1 and Daniel 7.

The most intriguing part of this verse is that the Antichrist is also of the seventh power. The seventh power is Babylon the Great, which is the United States of America. This means that Antichrist will have been a President of the United States of America, but he suffered a mortal head wound witnessed by the whole world. The whole world will think that he is dead, but the world will be greatly astonished when it is revealed that Antichrist is still alive. It is confirmed in the following verse that the mortal head wound of Antichrist only appeared to be a death wound. Antichrist will miraculously recover from the mortal head wound to cause the world to be astonished and admire him greatly.

(Rev 13:3 NIV)  One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast.

The beast is the Ten-Horned beast, and the head with the fatal wound is the Little Horn or Antichrist. Please note that the fatal wound took place in the past, and the healing took place in the past when Antichrist makes his reappearance. In the same way that Jesus came the first time to die for the sins of the world, Antichrist will mimic Jesus Christ in dying at his first appearance, and then making his reappearance as the conqueror on the white horse.

Anyone with just a little knowledge of American history should be able to identify Antichrist from the Biblical description of him. America has only had one leader that the whole world believes died with a mortal head wound. The mortal head wound has been witnessed by literally billions of people in movies and television. One can even purchase his own personal copy of the computer enhanced video showing the mortal head wound. This is the primary reason that the whole world has been greatly deceived into being absolutely certain that Antichrist is dead. Antichrist will be revealed in the very near future with his mortal head wound healed, and the world will be astonished, just as the Scriptures state.
